Have you ever tried something — a job, a sport, a college major, a hobby — and instantly realized it wasn’t for you? Maybe you felt bored. Maybe you felt trapped. Maybe you just hated it. Maybe you thought, “There’s no way I want my life to look like this.”

Believe it or not, that’s not failure. It’s actually guidance — one of the ways God leads you.

When you step into something and realize, “This isn’t it,” you’re not wasting your time. You’re learning. You’re discovering. Realizing what you don’t like is just as important as realizing what you do like.

But What About When the Door Slams Shut?

What about when you really want something — and it doesn’t happen?

  • You apply for a job… and get rejected.
  • You try out for the team… and don’t make it.
  • You apply to your dream college… and don’t get accepted.

It can feel like failure. It can feel like you’re messing up your future.

But what if those closed doors aren’t failures at all? What if they’re actually God at work — leading you exactly where you need to be?

God Guides Through Both Passion and Process

Sometimes God leads you with a spark — a passion that lights a fire inside you and makes you excited for what’s ahead. Other times, His direction shows up through the process — trying new things, learning what fits and what doesn’t, and crossing options off the list.

When you realize a job, a college major, a sport, or a hobby isn’t your path, you’re not failing. You’re hearing God’s “not this” — so when His “this is it” comes, you’ll be ready to recognize it.

Every closed door, every moment of disinterest, every disappointment — they’re all part of how God is refining your calling and focusing your heart. God isn’t just working through your passions and victories. He’s guiding you just as much through the “no’s” as He is through the “yes’s.”

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

God isn’t punishing you with a “no.”

He’s protecting you.

He’s redirecting you toward what’s best for you.

He’s closing doors that don’t match the amazing purpose He’s shaping for your life.

A Few Reminders for the Journey:

  • Don’t panic when you feel stuck. You’re not behind — you’re being prepared for what’s next.
  • Pray as you go. Keep asking God to lead you, even when the next step isn’t totally clear yet.
  • Trust that God wastes nothing. Even the experiences you didn’t love are shaping you for His plan.
  • Stay open. Your calling might surprise you — so stay flexible and trust that God sees the full picture.

In the End…

Your life isn’t a straight line from Point A to Point B. It’s a journey full of unexpected twists, new lessons, and surprising turns. You don’t have to “get it right” the first time. So, keep moving. Keep trusting. And remember: God is guiding you — even in the “no’s.”
